Stone Town

Stone sits in the Borough of Stafford around the Trent and Mersey Canal basin, which cuts through the centre and provides a continuous towpath along the water. The Market Square and High Street form the retail core, with a Town Hall and a regular market stall layout that faces the canal. Boats moor at the basin beside a low brick bridge and a line of former wharves, and the river channel runs close to the western edge of the built area. Narrow streets step up from the waterways toward rows of shops, cafés and public houses that serve local residents and passing boaters.

Beyond the centre, housing changes to terraces and semi-detached streets, with allotments and school grounds interspersed among residential blocks. Small industrial units and light business parks occupy the town’s fringe, reached by the A34 and local roads. A railway station provides regular services for commuters and shoppers. The town’s layout keeps commercial activity concentrated around the market and canal, while community facilities and parks sit a short walk from the High Street.
