Strawberry Hill

Strawberry Hill sits in the north of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, within Twickenham. The area grew up around Strawberry Hill House, the 18th-century villa created and remodelled by Horace Walpole. Walpole collected antiquities and assembled interiors that helped define the Gothic Revival; he also published The Castle of Otranto while based here. The house occupies gardens and a walled plot and hosts tours, exhibitions and community events that draw local visitors and students from nearby campuses.

The neighbourhood is mainly residential, with a small high street of shops, cafes and services and a railway station on the Kingston Loop that provides links to London Waterloo and Kingston. St Mary’s University sits within the area and contributes to a steady flow of students and staff. Road patterns and period housing reflect suburban development from the 19th and early 20th centuries, while local groups run festivals, history walks and conservation projects centred on the house and its immediate grounds.
