About

Stroud is a market town in Gloucestershire, sitting where five shallow valleys converge in the Cotswold hills. The town centre follows the line of a long High Street with steep side streets climbing the valley slopes. A regular Saturday farmers’ market occupies the centre, drawing producers from the surrounding farms and smallholdings. Rail service at Stroud station links the town with Gloucester and Bristol, and a network of bus routes connects nearby villages and industrial villages that grew up around the mills.

Industry shaped the town: small streams powered woollen mills and left a pattern of mill buildings and cloth halls. Ebley Mill, built in the early 19th century on the River Frome, remains a local landmark and has been repurposed for offices. The Stroudwater Navigation and Wallbridge basin lie at the edge of the town, with locks and towpaths that are used by walkers and for canal restoration projects. Community life centres on the Subscription Rooms for events, a cluster of galleries and workshops, and easy access from town to valley footpaths that run to fields and woodlands.
