About

Swanage is a coastal town on the Isle of Purbeck, situated at the eastern end of the Jurassic Coast. The area is defined by its sheltered bay, with a curving beach of sand and shingle backed by a traditional seafront promenade. The town itself sits in a natural amphitheatre of low chalk hills, with the distinctive Peveril Point headland marking its southern limit. Inland, the landscape transitions to the heathland and limestone ridges of the Purbeck Hills.

The local economy has long been connected to the quarrying of Purbeck stone, a distinctive limestone used in buildings across the country. Remnants of this industrial past, including old tramways, are woven into the surrounding countryside. The area's geology is prominently displayed in the coastal cliffs, which form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Swanage also retains a working steam railway, which connects the town to the ruins of Corfe Castle.
