Tankerton

Tankerton ward is a coastal suburb situated northwest of Canterbury city centre, bordering the Thames Estuary. The area is primarily residential, characterised by a mix of period properties and more modern housing estates. Its main focal point is the seafront, which features a long, grassy slope known as the Slopes, leading down to a wide, shelving beach of sand and shingle. This beach is popular for swimming and recreation.

The area includes the Tankerton seafront parade with local shops and cafes. A notable feature is the Street End Pond, a natural saline lagoon located just behind the beach, which provides a habitat for birdlife. The ward is well-connected by road to Canterbury and Whitstable, with regular bus services. It functions largely as a commuter settlement for the city while maintaining its own distinct coastal character.
