About

Telegraph Hill sits on a rise in the London Borough of Lewisham, between New Cross and Brockley. The name comes from a semaphore telegraph station that once stood on the summit. The area includes two adjoining public parks, Telegraph Hill Park East and West, laid out on the hill’s slopes; they contain open grass, play space and groups of mature trees, and their paths trace the hill’s contours. From higher ground there are wide sightlines over surrounding streets rather than dense enclosure, which is why the parks are used for informal sport and weekend gatherings.

Much of Telegraph Hill is a conservation area of late‑Victorian terraces and short streets that step down the hill. Many houses retain original brickwork and cast‑iron details. The neighbourhood supports a small cluster of local shops, community-run green projects and an annual local festival that uses the park as its focal point. The combination of the hill’s name, the divided East and West parks, and the preserved residential streets gives Telegraph Hill a clear local identity within Lewisham.
