About

Thorpe Bay is a residential coastal area in the east of Southend-on-Sea, centred around its own railway station. The area is characterised by wide, tree-lined avenues and substantial detached houses, many dating from the early 20th century. Its seafront is less developed than the central seafront, featuring a long shingle beach and the Thorpe Bay Yacht Club. The atmosphere is notably quieter and more suburban compared to the busier town centre.

The area's focal point is the large, grassy Thorpe Bay Gardens, which slopes down towards the sea. A defining feature is the presence of the London, Tilbury and Southend railway line, which runs parallel to the coast and separates much of the housing from the beachfront. Local shops and amenities are concentrated along the Broadway, near the station. The eastern end leads towards the vast mudflats and creeks of the Thames Estuary.
