About

Tintwistle ward is located in the far north of the High Peak borough, bordering the Peak District National Park. The area is defined by its position at the confluence of the River Etherow and several smaller streams. The landscape is characterised by steep, wooded valleys and open moorland on the higher ground. Settlement is concentrated in the village of Tintwistle itself, which sits alongside the Longdendale chain of reservoirs.

The ward's history is closely linked to water management and historic transport routes. The Longdendale Trail, a path following the former Woodhead railway line, runs through the area. This engineering legacy includes the now-disused Woodhead railway tunnels. The reservoirs, constructed in the 19th century to supply water to Manchester, remain a dominant feature of the local geography and environment.
