About

Tipton is a town in the Sandwell borough of the West Midlands, within the area known as the Black Country. It grew around coal, iron and chain-making industries during the 18th and 19th centuries, and remnants of that industrial network remain in the street pattern and built fabric. The town centre lies around Owen Street and High Street, with local shops, community facilities and schools serving neighbouring residential neighbourhoods.

The canal network is a visible feature across Tipton: parts of the Birmingham Canal Navigations run through the town and feed into small basins and short branches that once served local ironworks. Dudley Port railway station sits at the town’s eastern edge and provides a local rail link. Community groups maintain small green spaces and allotments that sit alongside former industrial sites, and a number of terraces and civic buildings reflect the town’s 19th century expansion and working-history.
