Toxteth

Toxteth is an inner‑city district immediately south of Liverpool city centre with a long urban history that began when Toxteth Park was parceled for housing in the 19th century. The area contains rows of Victorian terraces, pockets of postwar housing and several green spaces, including Princes Park. Public buildings and places of worship mark the street pattern; the Grade I‑listed Princes Road Synagogue is a notable landmark and focal point for local history. Main roads and frequent bus services link the neighbourhood to the city centre and to other parts of Liverpool, while local shops and community hubs serve everyday needs.

Toxteth is known for its strong community networks and for episodes that shaped city politics and planning. In recent decades residents and organisations have driven repair and reuse projects, among them the Granby Four Streets initiative, which combined housing repair, community gardens and public art to keep traditional terraces occupied. Social enterprises, youth projects and small local businesses continue to influence how streets are used and maintained, and property renewal and community-led schemes remain central to the area’s ongoing change.
