Usk, Goytre & Llangybi Fawr

Usk sits on the River Usk as a compact market town with a long history. A Norman motte and the line of the old castle earthworks lie close to the river, and a stone bridge links the town to the meadows on the opposite bank. Narrow streets contain independent shops, a market tradition and a handful of listed buildings that reflect Georgian rebuilding alongside older timber frames. Each summer the Usk agricultural show takes place on the town’s outskirts, bringing livestock, trade stands and local producers together on the river plain.

Goytre and Llangybi Fawr are the surrounding parishes of lanes, farms and small woodlands that feed into the town. Villages cluster around their parish churches and village greens, with footpaths and bridleways connecting fields and hedgerows to the riverside walks at Usk. The pattern of small fields, grazing meadows and occasional woodland blocks gives way to wider views across the Usk valley, and pastoral land use remains the dominant feature of this part of Monmouthshire.
