About

Wales covers the western third of the island of Great Britain, bordered by England to the east and the Irish Sea to the north and west. Mountain ranges include Snowdonia (Eryri), where the highest peak, Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa), reaches 1,085 m, and the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog). The Wales Coast Path traces the entire Welsh coastline, a continuous public footpath of about 870 miles that links cliffs, estuaries and sandy bays along the shore.

Cardiff is the capital and houses the Senedd in Cardiff Bay. The south retains evidence of a coal-mining past in valley towns and industrial ports, while the north-east contains the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a canal viaduct and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Welsh remains a living language in communities across the country, seen in place names and signage, and sheep farming and hill farming shape much of the rural land use.
