About

Conwy County Borough sits on the north coast of Wales where the River Conwy reaches the Irish Sea. The district includes Llandudno, Conwy town, Colwyn Bay and inland communities such as Llanrwst and Betws-y-Coed. Conwy town is dominated by a medieval castle and an almost complete circuit of town walls; on the quay there is the narrow red building known as the Smallest House in Great Britain. Two 19th-century bridges cross the river beside the castle: a suspension bridge by Thomas Telford and a tubular railway bridge by Robert Stephenson.
The borough stretches from coastal promenades and the limestone headland of the Great Orme to the wooded Conwy valley and the lower slopes of Snowdonia. The North Wales Coast Line and the A55 run along the coast while roads climb into the valley and uplands. Agriculture, tourism and small-scale manufacturing shape the local economy. Walking and climbing routes start from villages such as Betws-y-Coed, and Llandudno retains the Great Orme Tramway and a traditional pier that link to coastal attractions.
