About

Wales covers about 20,779 km² on the western side of Great Britain, with a coastline on the Irish Sea to the north and west and the Bristol Channel to the south. The interior includes mountain ranges such as the Cambrian Mountains and the massif that contains Snowdon, and three national parks: Snowdonia, Brecon Beacons and Pembrokeshire Coast. Rivers and valleys cut the uplands and meet tidal estuaries along many peninsulas and bays.

The highest point is Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) at 1,085 metres. Islands include Anglesey, where the village name Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch appears on signs. Cardiff is the capital. Welsh and English appear on road signs and in official use. Farming, former mining areas and coastal ports have shaped settlement patterns across the country.
