About

Swansea sits on the south coast of Wales at the mouth of the River Tawe, facing Swansea Bay. The waterfront includes Swansea Marina and the Maritime Quarter, with quays, moorings and the National Waterfront Museum on former docklands. The city centre is organised around a high street and Swansea Market, the largest indoor market in Wales, with long trading in fish and local produce. To the north, the Tawe valley opens into industrial and residential districts that reflect the city's 19th-century copper industry, which once led to the nickname "Copperopolis."

West of the city centre the Swansea district contains the Gower Peninsula, designated as the first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Britain, with limestone shoreline and beaches such as Rhossili within the same local authority. Cultural sites include the Dylan Thomas Birthplace and the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, while green spaces such as Cwmdonkin Park and Kilvey Hill give views over the bay. Rail and bus services connect neighbourhoods along the estuary and promenade, and long-established harbours and promenades remain part of daily life.
