About

Flintshire sits on the north-east coast of Wales, where the Dee Estuary meets the Irish Sea. Principal towns include Flint, Mold, Holywell and the Deeside urban area; the A55 and the North Wales Coast Line run along the northern corridor. Industry is concentrated on Deeside: Broughton houses Airbus wing assembly and Shotton contains steel and other manufacturing sites. Flint Castle, begun by Edward I in 1277, occupies a promontory above the estuary and anchors the town of Flint.

The county interior combines farmland, pockets of former mining land and small villages served by market centres. Near Mold, a Bronze Age hoard produced the Mold Gold Cape, now held in national collections. Holywell preserves St Winefride's Well, a continuing pilgrimage site with a chapel and spring. Walking routes follow river valleys and disused railway lines, while local markets and community halls host seasonal fairs and cultural events that reflect the area's long settlement and industrial connections.
