About

The Castle ward sits along the Dee Estuary in Flintshire, with its landscape defined by industrial heritage and coastal marshland. The area is centred around the town of Flint, dominated by the ruins of its 13th-century castle built by Edward I. This fortress, isolated on a tidal creek, was one of the first of the medieval 'iron ring' of castles constructed to subdue Wales. The local economy has historically been connected to heavy industry, notably a former chemical works.

Much of the ward's terrain consists of the flat, reclaimed salt marshes of the estuary, which provide important habitats for birdlife. The urban area is compact, with residential streets radiating from the central shopping precinct. A notable feature is the castle's solitary round tower, a unique detached keep that stands apart from the main curtain wall. The ward's identity remains closely tied to this historic monument and its strategic position overlooking the water.
