About

Newport is a city and county borough on the River Usk in south‑east Wales. The urban area runs from the river estuary inland to suburbs such as Maindee, Pillgwenlly and Rogerstone. Roman remains at Caerleon include an amphitheatre and the National Roman Legion Museum, while the Newport Transporter Bridge carries a ferry gondola across the Usk at the city waterfront. St Woolos Cathedral stands on Stow Hill above the central streets. The former docks and quays have been repurposed alongside a city market, shopping streets and the Riverfront theatre on the riverbank.

The borough is served by the M4 motorway and Newport railway station on the South Wales main line, linking Cardiff and Bristol. Tredegar House and parkland provide a large greenspace within the council area. Local employment reflects transport links and river access, with logistics, light industry and public administration among major sectors. Community life is shaped by market days, arts programmes at the Riverfront and sport and leisure facilities used across neighbourhoods from Caerleon to Pillgwenlly.
