About

Wrexham County Borough sits in north-east Wales, with the town of Wrexham as its administrative centre and largest settlement. The town lies on the River Gwenfro, which runs through the centre before joining the wider Dee catchment. Historically the area developed around coal, lead and iron working and later rail and brewing industries; traces of that past remain in industrial sites and former railway lines. Wrexham connects by road and rail to Chester and the English border, and serves as a regional hub for education, health and local government.

Local institutions include Wrexham County Borough Council, Wrexham Maelor Hospital and the university campus, and cultural life is tied to town venues, markets and community centres. Sport is prominent: the Racecourse Ground on Mold Road has staged football since the 19th century and is among the oldest international stadia still in use, and Wrexham AFC has a long local following. Small-scale manufacturing, light industry and agricultural land surround the urban area, and National Trust's Erddig sits to the south of the town within the borough.
