About

Wantage is a market town at the heart of the Vale of White Horse district. The Market Place remains the town’s centre, marked by the statue of King Alfred and by the parish church of St Peter and St Paul close by. The Vale and Downland Museum sits near the square and focuses on local history and farming. Letcombe Brook, a chalk stream, runs through the town and has been subject to restoration work; sections of its course are accessible from footpaths that cross the centre.

The town grew around markets and small industries; surviving timber-framed and brick buildings sit alongside housing from the 19th and 20th centuries. A conservation area preserves street patterns near the church and Market Place. Independent shops and services line the high street, with a library, leisure centre and community spaces used for occasional markets and events. Remnants of the 19th-century Wantage Tramway appear in old maps and some street names, a local reminder of the town’s transport history.
