The area is characterised by its two main sandy bays, St Mildred's Bay and West Bay, which are divided by a concrete promenade. A mix of Victorian and Edwardian architecture lines the residential streets leading back from the seafront.

The town retains a quieter pace, centred around its local shops and the historic Westgate Pavilion. A notable feature is the presence of tidal bathing pools, carved directly into the chalk reef at St Mildred's Bay, which fill and empty with the sea.
