Whitley Bay Promenade

The promenade runs along the seafront of Whitley Bay, where a paved walkway sits above a band of sand and rock. The Spanish City dome marks the seafront and contains cafes, a cinema-style space and small galleries that open onto the promenade. Shops, arcades and a few fish and chip outlets back onto the walkway, and cycling and walking are common along the sea wall. The promenade is used year-round for short strolls, dog walking and informal gatherings.

At the northern end a tidal causeway leads out to St Mary's Island and its lighthouse; the causeway is exposed at low tide and covered at high tide, so access depends on the tide. The shoreline here shows groynes, rock ledges and areas where seals and coastal birds are often visible from shore. Local markets, seasonal events and charity runs make use of the promenade space, and the route links into other coastal paths within North Tyneside for longer walks.
