Whitwell & Elmton

Whitwell and Elmton sit in the Bolsover district of Derbyshire, on the eastern edge of the county’s old coalfield. Whitwell grew up around mining in the 19th and 20th centuries and still shows rows of terraced miners’ houses along its main streets, a village hall, a primary school and a small cluster of shops. Elmton is a smaller, agricultural settlement set around farmed fields and a compact village core; the parish boundaries reveal a ribbon of old stone workings and short limestone outcrops at field edges that tell of local quarrying and the underlying geology.

The area is served by a network of public footpaths and lanes that connect villages, fields and small woodlands. Local clubs, a recreation ground and periodic village events form the centre of community life, while many residents combine work in nearby towns with farming or small businesses. Historic features such as old chapels and stone cottages appear next to modern housing, and the landscape retains field patterns and hedgerows visible on Ordnance Survey maps.
