About

Widewater ward occupies the northern section of Adur district, situated along the western bank of the River Adur. The area is largely defined by its coastal shingle and the extensive Widewater Lagoon, a saline habitat separated from the sea by a narrow strip of land. This creates a distinct landscape of still inland waters adjacent to the Channel. The residential areas consist primarily of housing estates and bungalows, with local amenities clustered around major roads leading into Shoreham-by-Sea.

The lagoon itself is a significant local feature, managed as a nature reserve that attracts various bird species. The surrounding paths are used for walking and cycling, connecting to the wider coastal route. The ward's eastern boundary is formed by the river and the railway line, which runs parallel to the A259 coast road. This infrastructure delineates the area from the more industrial and port-related activities found directly across the river in other parts of the district.
