Witham Town

Witham is a town in the Braintree district of Essex with a compact centre of shops, services and community facilities. The River Brain runs through parts of the town, meeting green corridors and small parks that link residential streets to the High Street. Local institutions include primary and secondary schools, a parish church with medieval fabric on the High Street, and a regular market that uses the central streets on set days. Housing ranges from Victorian terraces to post-war estates, and community halls and sports clubs sit alongside retail units and cafés.

The railway station is on the Great Eastern Main Line and is also the junction where the branch to Braintree leaves the main route, giving Witham direct commuter services to London Liverpool Street and local connections to the district. Industry and light commercial activity cluster near the station and along main roads, while conservation areas protect stretches of older buildings in the town centre. Walking routes follow the river and link to allotments, playing fields and small nature pockets close to the main shopping area.
