About

Woolston sits on the east bank of the River Itchen in Southampton, just east of the city centre. The Itchen Bridge links the area across the river; before the bridge opened in 1977 a chain ferry known locally as the Woolston Floating Bridge carried vehicles and passengers. Woolston railway station lies on the coastal line between Southampton Central and Portsmouth, providing regular rail connections. The riverside was long home to John I. Thornycroft & Company, whose shipyard shaped the waterfront and local economy for much of the 20th century.

The former shipbuilding sites along the foreshore have been redeveloped and are interwoven with housing, public paths and small boat moorings. Day-to-day life centres on local shops, cafés, pubs, primary schools and community groups, with short riverside walks used for fishing and commuting by bicycle. Visible slipways and waterfront workshops remain as reminders of the shipbuilding past, while the bridge and station keep Woolston connected to the rest of Southampton.
