Woolwich Arsenal

Woolwich Arsenal sits on the south bank of the River Thames in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The area developed around the Royal Arsenal, a munitions works established in the late 17th century and expanded through the 18th and 19th. Surviving brick workshops, magazines and the long ropeyard trace the layout created by military manufacture, and those yards gave the area its street pattern. Woolwich Arsenal station serves National Rail (Southeastern) and the Docklands Light Railway, linking the site to central London and east London docks.

Recent decades have seen the former industrial yards adapted for housing, studios, shops and riverside paths under the Royal Arsenal Riverside name. A river pier and the Woolwich Ferry provide crossings nearby, while local markets and arts spaces reuse former magazines and workshops. Interpretation panels and retained artillery-related structures record processes such as gun carriage assembly and rope making, so the townscape still reads as an industrial complex reshaped for everyday use along the Thames.
