The area is defined by its historic core, with streets lined by buildings constructed from the local honey-coloured limestone. The topography slopes noticeably, with the town centre lying at the foot of the steep scarp. Local governance and community activities are centred here, serving the surrounding rural settlements.

The area's history is closely tied to the wool trade, evident in the architecture of its former mills and the large Church of St. Mary the Virgin. A notable network of subterranean passages, known as the Wotton Salts, runs beneath parts of the town.
