About

The Wylye Valley follows the River Wylye as it winds through south Wiltshire, cutting a narrow floodplain between chalk downland. Small villages and farmsteads sit close to the river and to the A36 corridor, with lanes and a railway line running along much of the valley floor. Land use is a patchwork of arable fields, pasture and water meadows; the river’s course still shows old mill sites and low weirs where local communities managed flows. The steep scarp and shallow combes above the valley are worked grazing land and arable slopes.

The river itself is a spring-fed chalk stream with clear flow and beds of water crowfoot that mark its ecological character. Wild brown trout can be found alongside sedge and alder on the banks, and otter activity is recorded in stretches of the channel. Above the valley, the downland carries a concentration of Bronze Age barrows and linear earthworks, where ridge-top archaeology looks down over the river corridor and the fields below.
