About

Wyre is a local government district in Lancashire on the Fylde coast of North West England. The district runs from the Wyre estuary and Fleetwood in the north west, through Poulton-le-Fylde and Thornton-Cleveleys, to Garstang and the rural eastern parishes. The River Wyre flows south to north through Garstang before reaching the estuary at Fleetwood, and a short vehicle-and-foot ferry links Fleetwood with Knott End-on-Sea across the mouth of the estuary. The borough council is based at Poulton-le-Fylde and the district reaches the western edge of the Forest of Bowland AONB.

Settlement patterns combine coastal towns, market places and agricultural land. Fishing remains part of Fleetwood’s economy while Garstang is known for its food market and for declaring itself the UK’s first Fairtrade town. Salt marshes and mudflats along the Wyre estuary provide habitat for waders and wildfowl, and inland fields support mixed farming. Transport routes such as the A6 and local rail links connect the district’s towns and villages, and small industrial and service enterprises are distributed across the borough.
