About

Babergh is a district in the county of Suffolk in the East of England. It contains the towns of Sudbury and Hadleigh and a network of villages including Lavenham and Long Melford. The River Stour passes through the district and shapes local valleys and floodplain meadows around Sudbury. The local settlement pattern reflects centuries of activity tied to the medieval cloth trade and later to arable farming, with market towns serving surrounding villages and lanes linking dispersed hamlets.

Many centres in Babergh retain large numbers of timber-framed houses and narrow streets laid out in the medieval period; Lavenham’s compact centre and the flint tower of the Church of St Peter and St Paul are visible reminders of that past. Long Melford contains Melford Hall and extended village streets with period buildings. Conservation areas, listed buildings and public footpaths trace field boundaries and riverbanks, while local services, farming and small-scale enterprises continue to shape everyday life across the district.
