About

Barmouth sits where the River Mawddach meets Cardigan Bay, with a working harbour and a long sandy shore backing the town. The timber-and-iron Barmouth Bridge carries the Cambrian Coast railway across the Mawddach estuary and frames views of the tidal channel. A mix of seafaring activity, promenade life and local shops occupies the low-lying streets beside the quay, while the estuary’s channels and sandbanks shape the shoreline and harbour access.

Dolgellau lies inland on the River Wnion at the southern edge of Snowdonia, with a compact town centre of stone buildings and a market-town layout. The town sits beneath the ridge of Cadair Idris and has historical links to wool trade and nineteenth-century gold working in the surrounding hills. The Mawddach Trail follows the old railway line along the estuary between Dolgellau and Barmouth, linking river valleys, estuary flats and the two settlements by foot and cycle routes that use former railway infrastructure.
