About

Barrow, Chedburgh & Sicklesmere form a rural area southwest of Bury St Edmunds. The landscape is characterised by gently rolling farmland, interspersed with pockets of woodland and the meandering course of the River Lark. The settlements are small, centred around historic church buildings and village greens, with a network of quiet country lanes connecting them. This is primarily an agricultural part of West Suffolk.

The area is notable for the presence of the former RAF Chedburgh, a Second World War airfield whose dispersed technical site and runways have largely been reclaimed by agriculture. Public footpaths and bridleways crisscross the fields, offering views towards the distant rise of the Newmarket chalk ridge. The local community is served by a primary school in Barrow and the traditional Chequers public house in Sicklesmere, which sits on the busy A134 road.
