Bassett Green

Bassett Green is a residential district in the north of Southampton, centred on Bassett Green Road. The neighbourhood lies immediately north of the University of Southampton’s Highfield campus and is within easy reach of the city centre by frequent bus routes. At the heart of the area is a narrow triangle of common land called Bassett Green; it survives as an open strip between streets and appears on modern Ordnance Survey maps, offering a local meeting point and space for small events.

Housing in Bassett Green ranges from late-19th-century villas to mid-20th-century terraces and a number of purpose-built flats, giving a mix of household sizes. A small parade of shops and community facilities serve day-to-day needs, while regular buses link to Southampton Central station and the city hospital. Streets are interwoven with footpaths that lead to the university grounds, so many residents use those routes for walking and cycling. Local groups organise occasional litter picks and community gardening on the green.
