About

Beaumaris sits on Anglesey’s eastern shore beside the Menai Strait. The town grew around the late 13th-century castle begun under Edward I; its concentric plan and partly unfinished outer ward reflect a major medieval building campaign that stopped before completion. Narrow streets rise from a Georgian seafront to a small harbour and pier, and local museums occupy the former courthouse and gaol, preserving material on shipbuilding and coastal trade. Tidal flows in the Menai Strait shape the foreshore and influence the small marinas that line the water.

Benllech lies a few miles up the coast and is centred on a long sand-and-dune beach that faces east toward the Irish Sea. The promenade has cafes, shops and seasonal visitor facilities, while a compact village core contains everyday services. The Anglesey Coastal Path runs close to the shore here, giving direct access to the headland where a golf course and open grassland sit above the beach. Both settlements function as local service centres for the surrounding district and as bases for coastal walking, boating and tide-dependent fishing.
