About

Bishopsteignton sits on the slopes above the River Teign estuary, where narrow lanes run down to a small quay and slipway used by local boats. The village has a concentrated core of stone houses around a village green and a parish church, with footpaths that climb the valley sides and link orchards, old hedgerows and lanes used by walkers and cyclists. The quay and low-water foreshore record the estuary’s tides in plain view, and otters and wading birds are a regular sight along the mudflats at low tide.

Shaldon occupies the outer bank of the same estuary, curving around the mouth where the shingle spit known as the Ness shelters the river entrance. A passenger ferry runs across the channel, connecting Shaldon’s seawall, small beaches and boat berths to the opposite shore. The village has a mix of boatyards, slipways and promenades, and the Ness provides a focal point for tides, seabirds and passing yachts, with clear views along the estuary and out to the English Channel.
