About

Blaengarw, Pontycymer and Bettws are three neighbouring communities in Bridgend county borough set in the valley landscape carved by local rivers. Blaengarw sits at the head of the Garw Valley; its name comes from the Welsh blaen Garw, literally the "head of the Garw". Pontycymer occupies lower ground along the same valley and its name is formed from pont y cymmer, a reference to a bridge at a river confluence. Bettws lies nearby within the county borough and takes its name from the old term for a prayer house, reflecting its long church-centered community history. The river that runs through the Garw Valley remains a defining feature of settlement patterns and transport lines.

The three villages grew up around coal extraction and related industries; former pits and spoil tips still mark the slopes while community groups, chapels and halls work with reclaimed open spaces and footpaths. Local services include primary schools, small shops and sports clubs, and networks of bridleways and valley routes that link the settlements. Day-to-day life combines local employment, commuting to other parts of the county borough and events organised through village committees and volunteer projects.
