Blaina & Nantyglo

Blaina and Nantyglo sit close together in the Ebbw Fach valley in Blaenau Gwent, shaped by 19th‑century ironworking and coal extraction. The pattern of streets, rows of miners’ terraces and disused industrial sites records that history. At Nantyglo the remains of the ironworks include two circular towers that rise above the town and are visible from the valley floor; they form a local landmark tied to the area’s industrial past. The Ebbw Fach flows between the settlements and along its banks are community facilities, shops and institutions that serve the valley population.

The surrounding slopes are crossed by a network of public footpaths and former mineral tramways that link the towns with smaller hamlets and open ground above the valley. Community groups use converted industrial buildings for events and local services, and small-scale farming and reclaimed woodlands occupy former workings higher on the hillsides. Transport routes follow the valley axis, concentrating services in Blaina while Nantyglo retains visible traces of heavy industry in stonework and ruinous engine buildings.
