About

Blyth sits on the Northumberland coast at the mouth of the River Blyth, where the river meets the North Sea. The town grew around a working harbour, marked by north and south piers that guide the entrance. Fishing boats, cargo vessels and vessels serving offshore wind use the port, and a rail link runs into the docks area.

From the 19th century Blyth was a major coal-exporting port and shipbuilding centre; traces of that industrial past appear in former dockside yards and warehouses. Today the Port of Blyth handles aggregates and components for offshore wind projects and supports maintenance vessels. The seafront has beaches and a promenade, and community landmarks include Croft Park, home of Blyth Spartans football club. Local services, galleries and cafes cluster near the town centre, while inland residential streets extend toward Blyth estuary and the surrounding marshes. Regular bus and rail connections link the town to other parts of Northumberland.
