Brick Lane North

Brick Lane North runs from Bethnal Green Road down toward the centre of Brick Lane in Tower Hamlets. The street is lined with long-established food businesses and late-night eateries; a continuous queue often forms outside Beigel Bake at 159 Brick Lane, which has traded on the lane for decades. On the western side, the former Truman Brewery occupies several buildings and a cobbled yard that hosts market stalls and pop-up traders at weekends. Small shops, fabric wholesalers and secondhand furniture dealers share the ground floors of old commercial blocks, while narrow side streets lead to rows of former weavers' houses.

The area records layers of migration and industrial use in its buildings and street patterns. Former Huguenot and Jewish premises became tailoring and printing workshops before turning into restaurants and galleries, and traces of that history remain in shopfronts and signage. Street art appears on goods entrances and roller shutters, and markets set up under the brewery arches and along the lane. Travel through Brick Lane North is mainly on foot, where the sequence of shops, yards and alleys makes the neighbourhood legible at street level.
