Broad Oak & Horam

Broad Oak and Horam lie in the Wealden district of East Sussex, with Horam straddling the A267 between Heathfield and Hailsham and Broad Oak immediately to the north-east. The landscape is typical of the Weald: small, hedgerow-lined fields, mixed farmland and pockets of ancient woodland. Local woods still show signs of traditional management, with sweet chestnut coppice and spring bluebell displays in sheltered rides. A network of public footpaths and bridleways links the two settlements and the surrounding farms, making walking and riding straightforward from the village centres.

The area is served by a small cluster of shops, a primary school and a village hall that host community events. Bus services connect to Heathfield and Hailsham for wider facilities and rail links. Small-scale agriculture and equestrian holdings are common on the outskirts, and allotments and community greens give space for local activity. The villages retain a rural pattern of lanes and laneside cottages, with parish lanes often opening onto long views across pasture and woodland.
