About

On the north Cornish coast, Bude sits where the river Neet meets the Atlantic. The town provides a mix of sandy beaches and rock shelves; Summerleaze and Crooklets are popular with swimmers and surfers. On Summerleaze a tidal sea pool carved into the rock fills with each high tide and offers a sheltered swim at low water. A small harbour and the cliffs above the town shape short coastal walks, and the shoreline shows old cliff-top paths and rocky outcrops used for fishing and bird-watching.

Just inland, Stratton preserves a compact plan of narrow streets, a stone market cross and buildings from several centuries of local trade. The parish and village layout reflect its role as a market place historically and the land nearby was the scene of the 1643 Battle of Stratton. Linking sea and inland is the Bude Canal, originally dug to carry lime and coal and now used as a linear greenway with towpaths and ponds. Together the towns form a coastal and lowland scene where sea access, waterways and market history shape everyday life.
