Burniston, Sleights & Fylingdales

The Burniston, Sleights and Fylingdales area in North Yorkshire stretches from the coastal strip around Burniston inland into the Esk valley at Sleights and up onto Fylingdales Moor in the North York Moors National Park. The ground shifts quickly: low-lying arable land and lanes give way to the wooded valley carved by the River Esk and then to open heather moorland. Villages and hamlets sit along minor roads, with farms, footpaths and field boundaries linking settlement to landscape.

Sleights is set on the River Esk and is served by Sleights station on the Esk Valley Line; the river supports salmon and trout and is tracked by a string of bridges and old mill sites. Fylingdales occupies upland moor where the three geodesic radomes of RAF Fylingdales stand on Snod Hill and can be seen from surrounding ridges. Burniston lies close to the shoreline with a compact village centre and lanes that connect to coastal paths and nearby farmland.
