About

North Yorkshire lies in the Yorkshire and the Humber region and is the largest ceremonial county in England by area. It contains wide tracts of moor and dale, including the North York Moors National Park and much of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and a coastline of cliffs, bays and fishing harbours. Towns and service centres include Harrogate, Scarborough and Whitby. The Settle–Carlisle railway crosses the county; the Ribblehead Viaduct carries the line across the moorland near Ingleborough.

Farming and tourism are major parts of the local economy, with sheep grazing on the higher fells and market towns serving surrounding farms. Visitors come for walking, sea angling, coastal fossil hunting around Robin Hood’s Bay and ruins such as Fountains Abbey and Whitby Abbey. Harbours at Scarborough and Whitby still support small-scale fishing alongside holiday facilities. Local food includes Wensleydale cheese and other produce from market towns. Administration is delivered by North Yorkshire Council, with services based in county towns.
