About

Burnopfield is a village in County Durham close to the boundary with Gateshead. The main street links a small cluster of local shops, a primary school and a village hall. Houses include rows of 19th-century stone terraces built for mine workers alongside later suburban developments. A narrow stream runs through the village, and the village name is tied to that burn. Public footpaths and lanes lead out from the settlement onto surrounding farmland and patches of mixed woodland, used by walkers and people travelling to nearby towns.

The village developed around coal mining in the 19th and early 20th centuries; traces of that industry remain in roadside spoil heaps, miners’ cottages and place names. Some former colliery ground has been allowed to regenerate and now carries scrub, young trees and marked paths that link to the local lane network. Community events take place at the hall and on the green, and the area retains a largely local pattern of shops and services serving nearby villages.
