About

Buttershaw is a residential area in the city of Bradford, West Yorkshire, roughly three miles south-west of the city centre. The neighbourhood was built mainly in the 1950s and 1960s as a council estate to rehouse families affected by inner-city clearance, and it sits within the BD6 postcode. Local landmarks include Buttershaw Business and Enterprise College and the Buttershaw Centre, a shopping parade that serves day-to-day needs. Regular bus routes connect the area with Bradford Interchange and other parts of the city, giving residents public transport access for work and services.

Housing in Buttershaw is a mix of terraces, semi-detached houses and low-rise flats arranged around streets and small clusters of green space and playing fields. Community amenities include primary schools, a community centre and local health services, and junior sports teams use the pitches in and around the estate. Many homes were originally council-owned and some have changed to private ownership under Right to Buy, so the tenure pattern is varied across the neighbourhood. The estate’s post-war layout and civic cluster remain visible in the street plan and provision of services.
