Calderdale is a metropolitan borough in West Yorkshire, within Yorkshire and The Humber. The district follows the Calder Valley, where the River Calder cuts through the Pennines. Halifax is the administrative centre; other settlements include Hebden Bridge, Todmorden, Brighouse, Sowerby Bridge and Mytholmroyd. Industrial development in the 18th and 19th centuries left a network of Victorian mills, stone terraces and transport links such as the Rochdale Canal and the Calder and Hebble Navigation. Landmarks include the Piece Hall, Shibden Hall and Halifax's Wainhouse Tower. The Calderdale Way encircles the borough, crossing moorland, valley and reservoirs.
Calderdale's landscape includes reservoirs such as Scammonden and the Walshaw Dean group on the high moor, and wooded valleys like Hardcastle Crags with Gibson Mill beside a beck. Hebden Bridge and Heptonstall have short streets, independent shops and steep stone stairways; Heptonstall churchyard holds the grave of Sylvia Plath. The borough retains textile firms alongside heritage attractions; flood management, river restoration and walkers' routes influence planning and leisure. Public transport links connect towns along the valley, but much activity still centres on river corridors and former mill sites.
