About

Cardigan sits at the mouth of the River Teifi where the estuary opens into Cardigan Bay. The town grew around its medieval castle and quay; Cardigan Castle's restored walls and grounds now host local archives and exhibitions. The Teifi estuary supports fishing, canoeing and tidal creeks that reach inland to small farms and marshes. Offshore, Cardigan Island sits off Poppit Sands; the island has a colony of grey seals and is a regular haul-out for birds.

North-west along the Ceredigion coast is Aberporth, a village of beaches, cliffs and lanes that connect to the Wales Coast Path. Aberporth has a long foreshore used for bathing and rockpooling and a small harbour used by local craft. The headland above the village contains an instrumented missile and flight-test tracking range that monitors trials over Cardigan Bay. Both places combine working coastal communities, estuarine habitats and a mix of heritage features that reflect fishing, farming and maritime testing.
