About

Caterham Valley sits in the Tandridge district of Surrey at the foot of the North Downs escarpment, forming the lower half of the town of Caterham. The valley contains the town centre and the railway terminus; Caterham station sits at the foot of Harestone Hill and provides the branch line link into Purley and on towards London. Streets rise steeply from the station up to Caterham on the Hill, and the scar of the chalk escarpment is visible from many points in the valley.

The High Street runs along the valley floor and hosts shops, cafes and local services clustered around the station and the parish church hall. Community facilities include a leisure centre and several playing fields, used for football and cricket by local clubs. Housing is a mix of terraces, interwar houses and newer developments that fill pockets between commercial streets and green corridors. The valley's layout, with the rail terminus, the narrow main road and the abrupt climb to the Hill, gives the area a clear sense of place within Tandridge.
