About

Criccieth sits on the southern shore of the Llyn Peninsula, facing Cardigan Bay. A 13th-century castle built by Llywelyn the Great crowns a headland that separates two sandy beaches; the fortification was later altered during the Edwardian campaigns. The town has a small harbour and a seafront promenade, and Criccieth station on the Cambrian Coast Line links the town with other coastal communities. Tidal changes expose rock pools and the shore supports local fishing alongside seasonal visitors.

Llanaelhaearn lies inland in the same coastal hinterland and is centred on a medieval church dedicated to St Aelhaiarn. A spring beside the church has been a named local feature for centuries and feeds a short run of water through the village. Narrow lanes and field boundaries stitch the settlement to nearby farms and minor roads, and walkers use these routes to move between lowland farmland and the headland around Criccieth. Local services and transport connections concentrate in the larger coastal settlement, while Llanaelhaearn retains a village scale.
